Here is what to wear to F1 Austin: light, breathable layers in pale colors, a straw cowboy hat for the sun, and broken-in, low-heel roper boots (not brand-new tall boots), plus a bag no larger than 12 x 12 x 20 inches and a light jacket for the evening drop. The United States Grand Prix runs October 22–25, 2026, at Circuit of The Americas, and the Texas way to dress for it is one Western staple per part of the day — straw hat in the sun, ropers for the walking, turquoise and a jacket after dark.
Why not go full cowgirl? Because this year’s loudest style cues and the practical advice pull in opposite directions. COTA’s own USGP style guide pitches the “COTA Cowgirl” — statement boots, a fringe jacket, jeans and a cowgirl hat — and Tommy Hilfiger just dropped a denim-rooted Austin capsule. Meanwhile, the GrandPrixPal packing guide warns you can expect 15,000+ steps on grass, gravel and concrete, and that new shoes will blister. This guide splits the difference. For more boots-and-denim formulas, start at our Western Outfit Hub.

The rule: one Western staple per part of the day
WWD reports that the Tommy Hilfiger x Cadillac Formula 1 Team Austin collection launched October 13 with a light-wash men’s trucker jacket, a women’s denim vest with a silver foil coating, a T-shirt, a tank top and a denim cap — fanwear the team’s chief brand adviser, Cassidy Towriss, says is “designed to live well beyond the paddock.” That is the right instinct for race weekend: classic American pieces, one nod to Texas, nothing that needs a costume change.
The catch is the day itself. GrandPrixPal puts typical October daytime temperatures in Austin at about 64–84°F, with strong sun, then a quick drop to around 55°F after sunset — right when the concerts start. So instead of stacking every Western signal at once, assign each one a job: the straw hat handles the sun, low-heel ropers handle the miles, and turquoise plus a suede-look jacket handle the night.

Hat for the sun. Ropers for the miles. Turquoise for the night. One staple at a time.
Look 1 — Track day in full sun: pale shirt, straw hat, shoes you trust
Friday practice or Saturday qualifying from a grassy general-admission hillside, with laps of the fan zones between sessions.
Why it works: COTA’s general-admission viewing areas are grassy, and packing guides note shade there is limited, so the hat is the most useful Western piece you can wear, not just the cutest. A natural straw cowboy hat with a 3½-inch brim shades your face and neck and still reads Texas in photos. Under it, go light and pale: a lightweight white button-down worn open over a tank lets air move and keeps the sun off your shoulders, which a plain tee can’t do. (Our pick is lightweight 100% cotton with a linen-look weave, not true linen.) If you want the race-weekend graphic, the Tommy Hilfiger x Cadillac F1 Team Women’s Austin Tank Top ($39.90 when we checked) is the capsule piece that works best in the heat — a stretch-cotton scoop-neck tank. Finish with sneakers or ropers you’ve already walked a full day in.

The formula: pale, breathable top + one straw hat + shoes you’ve already walked a day in.
Look 2 — Race Sunday, the long walk: low-heel ropers + a wide, airy leg
Sunday is the big one: lights out for the Grand Prix, the podium, then the closing concert, with a lot of walking between your seat, the food and the trams.
Why it works: this is the day boots either earn their place or ruin it. A roper’s low heel and round toe sit at the walking end of the boot spectrum — Ariat says the Heritage Roper’s 1.125-inch heel is there for stability. Pair it with a pale linen-blend wide-leg pant: the wide hem falls over the shaft so the boot becomes a quiet base, air moves around your legs, and you’re covered from the sun without wearing heavy denim in the 80s. White shows dust, so pick one of the darker colors on the listing if that bothers you. For more on picking an everyday pair you can actually walk in, see our everyday Western boots guide.
Splurge vs. Save: the roper question

Splurge: Tecovas The Jamie, $345 when we checked. Austin-based Tecovas lists it in Scotch goat leather with a round toe, an 11-inch shaft with eight-row stitching, a 1¾-inch stacked leather heel with a rubber heel cap, a leather sole, lemonwood pegs and ¾ Goodyear welt construction. It is the dressier boot, and the welt means it can be resoled.
Save: ARIAT Women’s Heritage Roper, $169.95 when we checked (card 1 below). Full-grain leather, a 9-inch shaft, a 1.125-inch heel, a Duratread rubber sole and Ariat’s ATS support.
They are not the same boot, and the trade-offs matter at COTA. The Jamie has the nicer leather and the more refined build, but its leather sole has less grip on dry grass and gravel than rubber, and its heel is five-eighths of an inch taller. The Heritage Roper is shorter in the shaft and lower in the heel, and its rubber sole is arguably the more practical pick for a 15,000-step day — but Amazon reviewers are split on fit, with a number saying it runs narrow and feels stiff through the shaft until it breaks in (wide sizes are listed). Tecovas lists the Jamie in B (average) width only. Either way, if you’re buying now, wear them every day before race weekend; if they aren’t comfortable by Wednesday, wear sneakers to the track and save the boots for the night.

Race Sunday, the long walk
The formula: low heel + round toe + already broken in, under a hem wide enough to let air through.
Look 3 — After dark: same boots, add suede and turquoise
Friday and Saturday nights mean the Germania Insurance Super Stage — COTA lists Maroon 5 on Friday, Post Malone on Saturday and Alesso closing Sunday — or a late dinner back in town.
Why it works: when the temperature drops toward 55°F, you need a real layer, but you don’t want to carry a heavy coat all day. A cropped faux suede bomber (the listing calls the fabric lightweight) is easy to carry all day, its short length doesn’t fight a wide leg, and it adds the texture that makes the outfit look intentional at night. Turquoise drop earrings are the second Western note — small, but they catch stage light. Keep the same boots so your feet don’t change the plan. Our Texas suede jacket outfit guide has more ways to wear the layer, and the Texas fall layering guide covers the warm-day, cool-night problem in general.
One more thing for concert nights: COTA’s venue policies say Super Stage Concert Floor Upgrade and Loge Box areas only allow a 1-gallon clear plastic bag, a clear tote no larger than 12 x 12 x 6 inches, or a small clutch no larger than about 4.5 x 6.5 x 2 inches — so swap your day bag for a clutch if you upgraded. COTA says lockers will be available at the entrance to those areas.

Where to wear it: an F1 Austin weekend, day by day

- Thursday, Oct. 22 — Grand PrixView day (F1 Academy on track, Pit Lane walk, fan villages): Look 1 with sneakers, since you’ll be on your feet the whole time
- Friday, Oct. 23 — practice, then Maroon 5: Look 1 by day, add the bomber and earrings for the show
- Saturday, Oct. 24 — qualifying, then Post Malone: Look 1 or Look 2, depending on how much walking your seat needs
- Sunday, Oct. 25 — the Grand Prix, then Alesso: Look 2, with the Look 3 layer in your bag
- Off-track in Austin — South Congress shopping or dinner: Look 3 straight from the circuit; COTA’s own style guide name-checks Allen’s Boots on South Congress if you want to try on boots in person
Modern, not costume
Count your Western signals: two is the ceiling for a day at the track — say, a straw hat and boots, or boots and turquoise. Beyond that, it starts to look themed. Keep the rest of the outfit contemporary and functional: pale colors, natural fabrics, a clean belt, sunglasses. Also worth knowing: COTA’s prohibited items list includes “inappropriate or overly revealing attire,” so the tiny-shorts-and-boots rodeo look isn’t only a style risk.
Quick answers
What should I wear to F1 Austin? Breathable, pale layers (cotton or linen), a wide-brim straw hat, broken-in low-heel boots or sneakers, and a light jacket for the evening. Dress for sun by day and about 55°F at night.
Can you wear cowboy boots to the US Grand Prix at COTA? Yes, if they are already broken in and have a low heel and a grippy sole. Expect a lot of walking on grass, gravel and concrete; GrandPrixPal’s packing guide warns that new shoes will blister on COTA’s terrain.
What is the COTA bag policy for F1? For major races, bags can be no larger than 12 x 12 x 20 inches. Upgraded Super Stage concert areas are stricter: a 1-gallon clear bag, a clear tote up to 12 x 12 x 6 inches, or a small clutch.
Can I bring water into COTA? COTA permits one empty water bottle of 32 ounces or smaller per guest (no glass), and lists hydration stations at Turn 1, Turn 3, the Main Grandstand and the Grand Plaza. Sunscreen must be in a plastic bottle, not an aerosol can.
When is F1 Austin in 2026? The United States Grand Prix weekend at Circuit of The Americas is October 22–25, 2026, with Grand PrixView Thursday on October 22 and racing Friday through Sunday.
