Yes, you can wear a tuxedo with cowboy boots to a black-tie-optional night in Texas, and Saint Laurent just gave you the reason. Its Fall 2026 show marked the 60th anniversary of Le Smoking, the tuxedo Yves Saint Laurent cut for women in 1966, with fluid, unlined suits and a sloping shoulder. The trick is the boot: make it black, polished and pointed, like the Lucchese Summer ($1,295 when we checked), and keep everything else as clean as the runway. A black boot with a sharp toe looks deliberate with a tux. A brown roper or a fully tooled boot is the point where it turns into a costume.
Anthony Vaccarello, who is marking his tenth year leading Saint Laurent, opened the show with eight dark trouser suits worn with nothing underneath and had sent out 14 by the end, Sarah Mower wrote in her Vogue Runway review. The shoulder sloped the way it does in his men’s tailoring, and everything else was fluid and unlined. Why does a Saint Laurent tuxedo still stand apart? “Because it’s better cut,” Vaccarello told WWD. “There’s always that sleeve.” This guide is part of Runway to Ranch, our series on wearing one runway idea with real Texas boots.

The rule: a fluid tux, then one sharp black boot
The 49-look collection (the count comes from Vogue France) was strict about the shoe. On the runway the suits were worn with long-toed slingbacks, and Vogue France noted pointed shoes trimmed with a square satin rose. You are swapping that shoe for a cowboy boot, so the boot has to keep the same long, narrow line. A pointed or snip toe does that. Wide trousers should break over the boot shaft and stop just above the heel. That way only the toe and heel show, and the boot reads as a sleek black shoe until you sit down.
This works for a black-tie-optional night in Dallas or Houston because Texas already treats a good black boot as dress shoes. Keep it to one Western piece. With a tux, skip the hat, the bolo tie and the big buckle.
The tux stays fluid and quiet. The boot does the talking, and it should say black, polished and pointed.
Look 1: The full Smoking for a gala
For a black-tie-optional gala in Dallas, or a winter wedding in Houston where the invitation says “festive.”
Why it works: the finale, look 49, is the purest version of the idea, with a long single-breasted jacket, no shirt and a wide trouser that drops straight to the floor. Copy the proportion, not the label. Our Amazon pick is a black three-piece suit with a satin peak lapel, a V-neck vest and trousers ($92.99 when we checked). The satin lapel gives you the tuxedo signal that a plain black suit doesn’t. Wear the vest alone, buttoned, the way Vaccarello wore jackets with nothing underneath, or skip it for a slip top. The listing doesn’t say whether the jacket is lined, and reviewers report mixed sizing, so check the size chart and plan on hemming the trousers to your boot heel. Then put your money in the boot. The Lucchese Summer is handmade in Texas from burnished American calf leather with a leather outsole, a black stacked-leather heel, lemonwood-peg construction and 12-inch quarters. Its Seville cord stitching is tonal black on black, so from a few feet away it reads as a polished black boot, which is exactly what a tux wants.

The formula: a satin lapel + wide trousers hemmed to the heel + one polished black boot.
Look 2: Lace after dark, with a snip toe
For a gallery opening in Houston, or the after-party once the gala jackets come off.
Why it works: the other half of the show was lace made rigid. WWD says Vaccarello hardened it with latex, and Vogue describes it as silicone-covered, turned into tailored jackets, straight skirts and barely-there slip dresses. Look 28 is one of those slips. In Texas, a black satin slip with lace trim gets you the mood without the sheer runway fabric, and it works under your tux jacket from Look 1 or under a big coat on the one cold night of the year. Our pick is a kate spade new york satin midi slip with lace trim (38.25 inches long, $130.58 when we checked). It is satin with lace trim, not coated lace, so think of it as the easy version of the idea. Wear it with a black boot that has a long toe. The Dan Post Maria is the save boot here: a black leather snip toe with a leather outsole, a 13-inch shaft and a 2-inch heel, for $249.95 when we checked. One reviewer called the leather very polished, which is what you want next to satin. Others reported sizing problems and a finish that peeled, so buy where returns are easy.

Look 3: The Smoking jacket over dark denim
For dinner on a Saturday in Dallas, or the rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding.
Why it works: once you own a good black jacket, it doesn’t need its trousers. Look 36 shows the long, soft single-breasted cut and the sloped shoulder Vaccarello described. Wear your jacket over dark bootcut jeans and a black satin cami, and it turns into the dressiest thing you can wear with denim in Texas. The Ekouaer cami ($19.99 when we checked) is double-layered at the chest, though many reviewers say it runs tight across the bust. Levi’s 725 High Rise Bootcut (from $37.08, price varies by wash and size) has a leg that opens over a boot shaft. Use either black boot from above. Where to wear it

- A black-tie-optional gala in Dallas or Houston: Look 1, with the satin-lapel suit and the polished black boot
- A winter wedding where the invitation says “festive”: Look 1 or Look 2, with the tux jacket over the slip
- A cold night out: Look 2 under a big coat. WWD singled out the show’s “opulent shearlings as enveloping as a blanket”
- Saturday dinner or a rehearsal dinner: Look 3, the jacket over dark denim
Modern, not costume
Vogue France says Vaccarello drew on Romy Schneider in the 1971 film Max et les Ferrailleurs and on the heroine of Tennessee Williams’ The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone. That is the mood to borrow: sleek hair, a dark lip, gold earrings and nothing fussy. One Western piece is enough, and with a tux it should be the boot. If you want a middle option between Lucchese and Dan Post, Tecovas’ The Annie is a snip-toe cowhide boot with a 14-inch shaft and a leather sole ($375 in Midnight when we checked). For a softer, prairie take on boots with a dress, see our Chloé cowboy boots guide.
Quick answers
Can you wear cowboy boots with a tuxedo? Yes, especially to a black-tie-optional event in Texas. Choose a black, polished boot with a pointed or snip toe, and have the trousers hemmed so they break over the shaft and only the toe and heel show.
What did Saint Laurent show for Fall 2026? Anthony Vaccarello marked the 60th anniversary of Le Smoking with 14 dark, fluid, unlined trouser suits, plus lace stiffened with latex or silicone, slip dresses and big shearling coats, according to WWD, Vogue and Vogue France.
What color cowboy boots go with a tuxedo? Black. Brown or tooled boots pull a tux toward rodeo, while a smooth black boot reads as an evening shoe.
Do I need a real tuxedo? No. A black suit with a satin lapel, or a long black jacket over a slip dress or dark denim, gives you the same line.
