The best leather trench coat outfit for Texas is the simplest one: a long, belted leather trench over dark denim or a short knit dress, finished with a real cowboy boot. Bottega Veneta made the case at its Fall 2026 show, where Louise Trotter let the coat carry the whole look. Her Semi Shiny Leather Trench costs $22,500 when we checked. A faux-leather trench from Amazon costs $45.99. Below are three ways to wear one, plus an honest look at what the price gap actually buys.
Trotter’s second Bottega Veneta collection was shown on February 28, 2026, at the house’s headquarters in Milan’s Palazzo San Fedele. “Milan is this sort of very Brutalist city, with a sensuality that’s a little hidden,” she told reporters, according to Vogue Runway. The coats showed it: hard, belted shapes on the outside and soft leather and shearling underneath. In Texas, coat season is short, so you want one coat that does a lot of work. This guide is part of Runway to Ranch, our series on wearing one runway idea with real Texas boots.

The rule: let the coat be the outfit
At Bottega, almost everything under the coats was quiet: roomy trousers, a white shirt, a knit beanie. The leather did the talking. One trench, wrote Miles Socha in WWD’s review, “evoked licorice with its tightly ridged surface.” Vogue noted peacoats in matte croc and in an intrecciato weave (Bottega’s signature woven leather) sprouting fringe, and WWD reported that one curly swing coat was built from more than 2,000 shearling elements.
For Texas, keep the same idea and make it easier to live in. Pick one long leather (or faux-leather) trench, belt it, and keep what’s underneath simple. Then let your boots be the only other thing people notice. A trench that hits below the knee works with almost any boot shaft, because the coat covers the top of the boot and you see only a clean line of leather down to the toe.
One long leather coat, one belt, one good pair of boots. In Texas, that is the whole winter wardrobe.
Look 1: The brown trench over dark denim (Splurge vs. Save)
For a cool Saturday at the Fort Worth Stockyards, or a Dallas brunch that runs into the afternoon.
Why it works: look 16 is the clearest version of the idea, a long cognac leather trench cinched with a wide brown belt. Wear yours over dark bootcut jeans like Levi’s 725 High Rise Bootcut (from $37.08, price varies by wash and size) and a white shirt. WWD spotted a free styling trick across Milan this season: pop one collar of your white shirt outside your coat. With a brown trench, finish with a brown roper or a pointed boot.
Splurge: Bottega Veneta’s Semi Shiny Leather Trench in a pale shade the house calls Rubber ($22,500 when we checked). It is soft lambskin, fully lined and oversized, with a woven Intrecciato leather collar and long woven epaulets, and it is made in Italy. Bottega says to clean it only through a specialist leather service. Save: the utcoco faux-leather trench in Brown ($45.99 when we checked; it also comes in Black, Camel and Wine Red). It is double-breasted with a notched lapel, a self belt, buckled cuff straps and side pockets, and the brand says to wipe it clean with a damp cloth. These are not the same coat. Real lambskin breathes, softens and takes on character as you wear it; polyurethane faux leather looks sharp out of the box but won’t age the way leather does. The utcoco brown is also a darker chocolate than the runway cognac, so choose Camel if you want it lighter. For a coat you wear a few weeks a year, the save is a smart way to test the shape first.

The formula: a belted trench + dark bootcut + one popped white collar.
Look 2: The black trench, a short knit dress and a tall boot
For the first cold night in Austin, or dinner on Main Street in Fredericksburg.
Why it works: look 55 is a long black belted coat with a ridged surface and a woven collar, worn with black boots. The Texas version is all black and leg-forward: a short ribbed sweater dress under a long black trench, with a tall black boot filling the gap between the hem and the coat. The OFEEFAN dress ($24.87 when we checked) is a long-sleeve, fit-and-flare rib knit in 90% polyester and 10% spandex, so it is a warm-looking layer rather than a true wool sweater. The Dan Post Maria is the boot: black leather with a snip toe, a 13-inch shaft and a 2-inch heel ($249.95 when we checked). A snip toe keeps the line long under a long coat. For the coat, the utcoco trench from Look 1 also comes in Black.

The formula: a short knit dress + a tall black boot + a coat longer than both.
Look 3: Borrow the belt, Bottega-style
For a Houston workday that turns into happy hour, or a Sunday in Waco.
Why it works: Vogue noted that Trotter hung wrap skirts from a sturdy leather belt, an idea she said she took from bag construction. Look 4 shows the spirit of it, a grey wool look with rounded shoulders cinched by a long brown belt. This is the cheapest way into the trend, and it is already Western. Belt any long coat, or a coat-dress, with a real leather Western belt. The Ariat Center Stitch belt ($75 when we checked) is 100% leather with an engraved, silver-tone Western buckle, so it is the one piece doing the talking. Match it with a brown boot like the Ariat Heritage Roper ($169.95 when we checked), a leather boot with a rubber sole and a mid-calf shaft that sits neatly under a long hem. Where to wear it

- A cool Saturday at the Fort Worth Stockyards: Look 1, the brown trench over dark denim
- The first cold night out in Austin: Look 2, all black with a tall boot
- A Houston workday that ends at happy hour: Look 3, a belted long layer and a roper
- Holiday travel through DFW or Austin airports: any of the three, because a long coat over a simple outfit packs light and looks finished
Modern, not costume
Keep it to one Western piece besides the boots, and with a leather trench that piece is usually the belt. Skip fringe on the coat and skip the hat if the coat is already a statement. Quick answers
What do you wear with a leather trench coat? Keep it simple underneath: dark bootcut jeans and a white shirt, or a short knit dress. Belt the coat and let the boots be the other focal point.
Can you wear cowboy boots with a long coat? Yes. A trench that ends below the knee covers the top of the shaft, so a snip-toe or roper boot reads as one clean line. Tall boots work best with dresses, ropers with jeans.
Is a real leather trench worth it in Texas? It depends on how often you’ll wear it. Real lambskin breathes and ages well but needs specialist cleaning. Faux leather is cheaper and easier to wipe down, but it won’t develop the same character.
What did Bottega Veneta show for Fall 2026? Louise Trotter’s second collection, shown in Milan on February 28, 2026, focused on sculpted tailoring and coats in leather, croc-effect, woven leather and shearling, plus wrap skirts hung from leather belts, according to Vogue and WWD.
