Apres ski outfits are what you wear once the skis come off: the walk from the lift to the lodge, a seat by the fire, then dinner. The job is simple. Stay warm, stay upright on packed snow, and still look like you got dressed on purpose. If you are a Texan wondering whether your cowboy boots can come along, the honest answer is below.
The apres ski formula
Our rule of thumb is four pieces, and it is opinion, not a rule from anyone else. A soft knit you are happy to be seen in, a coat that is actually warm, a boot with grip, and one finisher such as a hat. Keep the palette quiet (black, cream, wine, navy) and let texture do the work. For the full-on-mountain side of the closet, see our guide to luxury ski brands and ski fashion. For the western half of the outfit, start with the western outfit hub.
Can you wear cowboy boots in the snow?
For short, dry walks, yes. For anything longer or icier, plan around three facts that the boot makers and western writers agree on:
- Soles. A smooth leather sole is slick on ice and packed snow. Horse Racing Sense recommends a rubber or lugged outsole for regular icy walking, or slip-on traction cleats over the boots you already own. Ariat says leather and suede soles shouldn’t be worn on snow or ice, and points to full rubber or Duratread outsoles for traction.
- Warmth. Most cowboy boots aren’t insulated. Wool socks are the simplest upgrade, and Tecovas notes that boots like The Stockton and The Bandera use Vibram rubber soles with textured grip.
- Water. Leather can take in moisture in slush, and Ariat notes that salt can stain it. Condition the leather before the trip.
If the plan is a long, cold evening outdoors, step up to a boot built for it. The Kenetrek Bobcat Cowboy Zip is one example: its Amazon listing describes a removable liner with 400 grams of Thinsulate insulation, waterproof construction and a rubber cowboy outsole with an open tread. We haven’t worn it, so treat that as the maker’s description, not our test.
Look 1: The walk to dinner
Cold air, a short walk on cleared sidewalks, a restaurant with a coat check. Put a fitted knit under a warm coat and wear the boot with the best grip you own. Why it works: the knit shows when the coat comes off, and the coat does the warm work outside.

Warm coat, fitted knit
The formula: warm hooded coat + fitted knit + a boot with grip.
Cordova describes the Kitz as a fitted ski sweater with a tall ruffled collar and long cuffs with thumbholes, in a warm stretch knit. The puffer is the Amazon pick in this pair; we only show prices from brand sites, so tap through for the current Amazon price. Look 2: By the fire
The lodge is warm, the knit is the outfit, and the hat is for the walk back. Cordova’s Dauphine is a matching merino and cashmere sweater and short set that can be worn together or split up, which makes it easy to pack.

Matching knit, one warm hat
The formula: one soft knit set + a warm hat + a coat you love over it.
Image source for the beanie: Cordova. Cordova lists the beanie as a merino-cashmere knit with a double-fold cuff. If you want a showpiece coat over the top, Perfect Moment’s Duvet Down Ski Jacket was $995 on its own site when we checked, and its page describes 700-fill-power down with an internal snow skirt.

Quick answers
What should I wear for apres ski? A warm coat, a knit you like, a boot with grip and one finisher. Skip anything you would be sorry to get wet.
Are cowboy boots okay for apres ski? For short, dry walks, yes. On ice or in slush, use a rubber or lugged sole, add traction cleats, or switch to a winter boot, per the sources above.
Do I need to spend a lot? No. The coat and the boot do the most work, and those are the places to put money first. The knit is the piece people see, so it is the fun place to splurge or save.
