The easiest shearling coat outfit for Texas is a short, cropped shearling jacket over a white tee and dark denim, finished with real cowboy boots. Keep everything under the coat plain and let the pile do the work. Bottega Veneta made shaggy, fur-like coats the headline of its Fall 2026 show, and the Texas way to wear the idea is shorter and simpler: a bomber or ranch-length jacket, not a floor-length fluff coat. For the money question, a real sheepskin B-3 from Schott was $1,535 when we checked, and Free Country’s faux-shearling Shearlux jacket was $98. Below are three ways to wear one, plus an honest look at what the price gap buys.
Louise Trotter’s second Bottega Veneta collection was, in the words of WWD’s Miles Socha, “all about hairy styles.” Silk threads, recycled fiberglass, fuzzy knits and hand-tinted shearling all bounced down the runway, and Trotter told reporters that one curly swing coat was made from more than 2,000 shearling elements. Vogue Runway noted that real shearling was brushed to look like fox, while silk was worked to ripple like curly shearling, so on the runway it was hard to tell which was which. This guide is part of Runway to Ranch, our series on wearing one runway idea with real Texas boots.

The rule: big pile on top, plain and slim below
Every shaggy coat at Bottega worked for the same reason: what came underneath was quiet. Look 43 put a hip-length cream jacket over slim black trousers. Look 49 belted a camel coat over grey tights. The proportion is the whole trick. A shearling jacket adds a lot of volume up top, so slim denim and a boot with a clean shaft keep the outfit from looking like a costume or a sleeping bag.
Texas makes the short version the smart one. Coat weather here comes in bursts, so a cropped jacket you can throw over jeans on a cold morning and take off by lunch gets far more wear than a long coat. The cropped sheepskin coat has deep roots in ranch country, too. Schott still makes its cowhide 596 Rancher jacket with a detachable real sheepskin collar, which is the working version of the same idea.
Big pile on top, slim denim below, and a boot with a clean shaft. That is the whole shearling outfit.
Look 1: The cream jacket, white tee and dark denim
For a cold Saturday morning at the Fort Worth Stockyards, or a walk around the square in McKinney before brunch.

Why it works: look 43 is the most wearable coat in the show, a hip-length cream jacket that stops right where your jeans start. Copy the length, not the red collar. Wear a cream faux-shearling jacket over a plain white tee and dark straight or bootcut jeans, and finish with a brown boot. Cream and dark denim is a high-contrast pairing, so it looks finished with no jewelry at all. One belt with a small Western buckle is enough Western detail. If you want a lighter shade than the Free Country jacket below, Buffalo Jeans’ Gwynne faux-shearling teddy zip jacket in Biscotti was on sale for $47.40 (regularly $79) when we checked.
The formula: a hip-length cream jacket, a white tee, dark denim and a brown boot.
Look 2: The brown sheepskin bomber (Splurge vs. Save)
For a cold night in Austin, a Hill Country drive, or an early flight out of DFW.

Why it works: look 49 shows how good warm brown pile looks with tan leather. The Texas version is the classic leather-out, shearling-in bomber: brown leather on the outside, a thick cream collar and cuffs. It goes with every pair of cowboy boots you own, because the leather echoes the boot. Wear it over a cream knit and dark jeans, zipped up on a cold night and open the rest of the time.
Splurge: Schott 247SW Women’s Sheepskin B-3 Bomber in Brown ($1,535 when we checked). Schott says it is made in the USA from sheepskin with a leatherized finish on the outside and the plush sheepskin pile as the lining, based on the B-3 military bomber. Real sheepskin is one material doing two jobs, the leather and the warmth, so it breathes, holds heat without much bulk and softens as you wear it. Save: Free Country Women’s Shearlux Faux Shearling Jacket in Cream ($98 when we checked). It is 100% polyester faux shearling with a knit backing, faux-suede trim, a stand collar and lower welt pockets, and it is machine washable. These are not the same jacket. The Free Country flips the look, with the pile on the outside instead of leather, and polyester pile won’t soften and age the way sheepskin leather does. Faux pile can also flatten or mat with wear. But you can wash it at home, and for a jacket most Texans wear a few weeks a year, that matters.
In between: Schott’s 2125W Women’s Sheepskin Bomber (on sale for $350, regularly $625, when we checked) is a 21-inch curly sheepskin bomber in a dark Ebony shade with a leather waistband, closer to the curly texture on the Bottega runway. Schott lists it as imported, with a quilted poly-fill lining.

The formula: a brown leather-and-shearling bomber, a cream knit, dark jeans and brown boots.
Look 3: The long coat, short dress and tall boot
For a holiday party in Dallas, or a cold night out on Main Street in Fredericksburg.

Why it works: look 40 is the full runway fantasy, a long cream coat tied with a wide camel belt. In Texas, save the long coat for a night out, when you are walking from the car to the door and back. Wear it over a short sweater dress with a tall boot, so the only skin showing is a few inches of leg between hem and shaft. Belt the coat at the waist the way Bottega did, with a wide tan leather belt, and keep the boot simple. A snip or pointed toe keeps the line long under all that volume. Our cowboy boot toe types guide explains the difference.
The formula: a long coat, a short dress, a tall boot and one wide belt.
Where to wear it
- A cold Saturday morning at the Fort Worth Stockyards: Look 1, the cream jacket with dark denim
- A Hill Country drive or an early flight out of DFW: Look 2, the brown bomber
- A Dallas holiday party: Look 3, the long coat over a short dress
- A high school football playoff game in December: any cropped shearling, because it is warm enough for the stands and short enough to sit in
Modern, not costume
Shearling already reads Western, so you don’t need much else. Skip the fringe, skip the hat if the collar is big, and let the boots be the only other statement. If you like a leather-out jacket but want something lighter for warmer days, our Texas suede jacket outfit guide has the same idea in suede. For a longer leather coat, see how to wear a Bottega-style leather trench.
Quick answers
What do you wear with a shearling coat? Keep it slim and simple underneath: a white tee or cream knit, dark jeans and a boot with a clean shaft. The coat adds the volume, so everything else should be quiet.
Can you wear cowboy boots with a shearling jacket? Yes. A brown leather-and-shearling bomber is a natural match for brown boots, and a cream faux-shearling jacket looks sharp with a tan or brown boot and dark denim.
Is real shearling worth it in Texas? It depends on how often you’ll wear it. Real sheepskin is warm without much bulk, breathes and lasts, but it costs far more and needs specialist cleaning. Faux shearling is cheaper and often machine washable, but the pile can flatten over time.
What is the difference between shearling and sherpa? Shearling is sheepskin with the wool left on, so the leather and the pile are one piece. Sherpa and “faux shearling” are usually polyester pile made to look like it.
What did Bottega Veneta show for Fall 2026? Louise Trotter’s collection in Milan focused on fur-like textures, coaxed from silk, fiberglass, knits and hand-tinted shearling, according to WWD and Vogue Runway.
Prices were checked October 28, 2026, and change often: Schott 247SW $1,535, Schott 2125W $350 on sale (regularly $625), Free Country Shearlux $98, and Buffalo Jeans Gwynne $47.40 on sale (regularly $79).
